How do you apply interior film?

Preparation
Good preparation is essential for a durable installation. Before applying the film, always inspect the surface thoroughly. Any damage, scratches or imperfections that you can feel with your fingers will remain visible after application. Interior film is durable but not a filler, irregularities will show through. Repair surface damage beforehand, for example with filler, for the best result.

If you are unsure whether the film will adhere properly, apply a small test piece first. Strongly textured surfaces are not suitable for interior film. Light textures or wood grain can work, but keep in mind that the structure will remain visible after installation.

For surfaces without a sealed top layer, such as untreated MDF, always test adhesion first. In many cases, using a primer on edges and corners will improve long term bond strength.

If your cabinets or countertops have caulked seams, remove the caulk first film will not adhere to it. After the film is applied, reapply fresh caulk to keep water and dirt from getting underneath, especially in kitchens.

Ensure the surface is completely free from grease and dust. A good degreaser and a clean microfiber cloth are essential.

Recommended temperature
Work in an environment between 15–25°C. In colder conditions the film becomes too stiff, in warmer conditions the adhesive becomes too soft.

Applying the Film
For cabinet doors, cut the film approximately 5cm larger on all sides. This gives you enough material to wrap edges and corners cleanly.

Interior film does not stretch, so correct application technique is essential. Avoid pulling or overstretching the film, as this can damage the structure and cause lifting over time.

A heat gun and a wrapping glove are essential tools. Interior films are thick and sturdy, but when lightly heated they become more flexible and easier to form around edges and corners. Do not overheat, excessive heat can create glossy spots or damage the texture.

Use a soft felt squeegee to avoid scratches and ensure smooth, bubble free application. Work from the center outward with firm, even pressure.

Corners should be folded or pleated, not stretched. For seams or long surfaces, align panels carefully and use clean, straight cuts. Some installers use a light post heat on folded corners to stabilize the film, but this should be done carefully.

Aftercare
- Avoid cleaning or wet conditions for at least 48 hours.
- Clean only with mild cleaners and a soft microfiber cloth.
- Avoid abrasive or solvent based products.
- For countertops, protect the film from excessive heat (pans, ovens, steam).

With proper preparation and technique, interior film delivers a durable, beautiful finish.
